Posted on: November 18, 2013

With November upon us, it’s time to tackle those winter-preparedness cold-weather tasks! When you’re looking for something to do this month, take on these November home improvement projects. Your home – and your family – will thank you for being prepared!

Is Your Chimney, Fireplace or Wood Stove Ready?

In cold weather, people who have them like to cozy up around a fireplace or wood-burning stove for warmth and a pleasant period of family relaxation. But is your chimney, fireplace or wood stove ready for the season? A buildup of creosote can lead to a dangerous chimney fire, and clogged flus can lead to some very unpleasant consequences. Now’s the time to perform seasonal maintenance and ensure your wood-burning setup is ready to go. While you’re at it, don’t forget to store your firewood away from the exterior wall of your home to cut down on termite risks!

Prepare Your Snow and Ice Removal Tools

It’s never fun to find out that your snowblower is busted, there’s been a run on sand and ice melt, or that your shovel is missing when the first big snowstorm hits. Take the time now to prepare your snow and ice removal tools – before it’s too late to service your snowblower or find sand and ice melt at your local stores. You’ll be glad you did when the first big snowstorm sweeps in and you’re all ready to go, while your neighbors are scrambling!

Get Ready for Cold Temperatures

If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to check out your home for drafts and heat leaks and prepare for cold temperatures. Re-caulk windows or add weather stripping if you detect any drafts. Check around exterior doors to ensure there’s no cold weather coming in – or heat going out. If you’ve got old, single-paned windows, cover them with plastic to help provide an insulating layer of air and keep the house warmer. Now is the time to prepare for cold temperatures so you can save on heating bills and keep the house cozy in the cold months ahead!
