March Home Improvement Tips

Posted on: March 15, 2014

March has arrived, and it brings with it the first signs of escaping what was for much of the country a long, cold winter! As spring peeks around the corner, now is the time to do a little freshening up, prepare for the rain and mud that often comes with spring, and get a head start on your landscaping for the season!

Get a Jump Start on Your Spring Cleaning
Kick-start your spring cleaning by doing some indoor chores until the weather warms enough to tackle some of the colder tasks. Start by reviewing the contents of your medicine cabinets and throwing away old prescriptions – or taking them to a local prescription medication disposal day to avoid contaminating groundwater and landfills. Clean the inside of the refrigerator with mild detergent – remove the trays and shelves, wash it and allow it to dry thoroughly. When the weather gets warmer, tackle your garage and prepare old or infrequently-used items for a yard sale.

Prepare for Heavy Rains
Spring often brings heavy rains – and this year, with much of the country still under snow cover, the spring thaw is going to bring a lot of water from melting. Make sure your house is equipped to handle heavy rains. Inspect your drain spouts – make sure they didn’t pull away from your house during the winter freeze and thaw cycles, and make sure they’re draining well away from your foundation. Check your sump pump to make sure it’s working properly, and inspect basement walls for signs of moisture the next time it rains. Catching a water problem early is key to avoiding a serious issue.

Get Your Landscaping in Order for Spring
As the weather gets warmer, it’s time to revive your landscaping! It may still be too cold to think about flowers, but you can fill low areas in the yard or next to the foundation with compacted soil. Eliminate any areas where water pools in the summer to avoid creating a mosquito reeding ground. Pull old, dead plants, lay out new beds and prepare your landscaping plan so you’re ready when the weather finally warms!
