Don’t Be Afraid to Fire Your Team Members

Posted on: May 29, 2014

In a perfect world, you’d find the right people to help you buy a home from the beginning. You’d get the right real estate agent, the right lender and the right lawyer without skipping a beat. In the real world, though, sometimes things don’t happen so smoothly. Occasionally you might find the wrong person to help you navigate the home-buying process. Don’t just live with your mistake; these people are helping you make one of the biggest decisions of your life. Don’t be afraid to fire your team members to give you the best chance of finding the perfect home and getting the best deal you can.

Don’t Tolerate Condescension, Being Treated Badly or Being Ignored

Most of the people you’ll encounter when you’re buying a home are wonderful, friendly people who are genuinely interested in helping you. However, as in any other profession, sometimes you just run across a bad egg. If you’re being treated with condescension or otherwise treated badly, don’t hesitate to make your displeasure known.

Being ignored is slightly more difficult to pin down, as sometimes you just get a professional who is busy and doesn’t have as much time to devote as you’d like. However, if you feel that your concerns aren’t being addressed or you’re being ignored, there’s no reason to stick with the same people.

Don’t be Afraid to Switch Professionals or Firms

In some cases, you can solve your problems by switching to a different professional in the same firm. If you’re working with a real estate brokerage agency, for example, a different agent might solve your problem. Talk with the brokerage manager and ask to work with someone else, and explain your concerns. If you think it’s an issue of values or firm-wide attitude, however, don’t be afraid to switch firms entirely. You are the one who has to live with the consequences of your decisions, so make sure you’re working with the right team.
